European Union Rejects the Move to Ban Animal Testing
Breaking news: Despite the efforts of Stop Vivisection, 1.1 million signatures wasn’t sufficient to force a change in the European Union’s animal testing policies, as they will continue to use a previous directive implemented in 2010.
The Commission argues that the tests that require animals are being used due to their importance in maintaining human health, and they will continue to encourage working toward alternatives, such as computer models. The intention is to eventually reach the point where these models and/or other alternatives can overtake animal testing entirely (therby phasing the then-archaic methodology out). However, there is no clear strategy in the press-release regarding this phase-out, which, understandably, is part of the petitioners’ frustration.
