More Chicken Abuse – Dagsboro Chicken Farm #NotCrueltyFree
The following video depicts the severe living conditions and abuse of chickens at Dagsboro Chicken Farm in Delaware:
According to Delaware Online (having broken the news yesterday), “The video is being used in the group’s “Tyson Tortures Animals” campaign, which seeks to stop “inhumane” practices.”
Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson in an email said the Dagsboro case is under investigation and that “animal well-being is a top priority for us.” He said a respiratory illness had hit the farm during the time of the investigation and that the video showed images not typical for the facility. “We do not tolerate improper animal treatment and take claims of animal abuse very seriously,” he said.
While the investigator did not directly comment in the article, “[the investigator] worked as a general laborer and tended to a flock of 290,000 chickens across seven barns, with a camera hid away. He said the worker estimated about 17 percent of chickens died in the growing cycle; the industry standard is 4 percent.” While there may be something to Mickelson’s comment about respiratory illness, you can see in the video that this can’t possibly account for the living conditions themselves, the health of the chickens depicted, or the mild but disturbing treatment of the chickens by the workers.
