First Vegan Supermarket Coming to the US in 2016!
The first ever completely vegan supermarket chain, Veganz, will officially be open in the United States in 2016!
Veganz was founded in Berlin, Germany, and with the goal of going international, the supermarket chain will make its premiere in Portland, Oregon, sometime in the upcoming year.
The founder of the supermarket, Jan Bredack, opened the chain in 2011 and was originally a “meat-loving” manager at Daimler. After experiencing burn-out, the 42-year-old decided to make major changes to his lifestyle, including adopting a vegan diet in 2009. He even documented the transition in his book, titled: Vegan für alle: Warum wir richtig leben sollten, which translates to “Veganism is for everyone: Why we should live right”.
It was after traveling to Scandinavia, Russia, and the United States that the idea to open a vegan supermarket occurred to Bredack. He stated:
“The decision to open a vegan supermarket came from a potpourri of ideas after coming across various vegan products in the US and Russia.”
Veganz currently has three supermarkets located in Berlin, and other German cities one can find the supermarket include Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Leipzig, and Essen, with plans-to-expand to Stuttgart, Cologne, Hanover and Düsseldorf. The international locations currently include Vienna and Prague and more will soon reportedly be popping up in London, Amsterdam, Zurich, Barcelona, Milan, and Copenhagen.
In terms of variety, Veganz has “every type of food that you would expect in your usual supermarket“, including vegan cheeses, fish and meat, which include the traditional schnitzels and even currywursts.
Bredack stated his inspiration includes providing meat-free alternatives to show how easy a plant-based diet can really be. He stated:
“It should be really simple. People shouldn’t have to cut out anything. I do it because it comes from the heart. Money is not the motivation, but the chance to do something good in life.”
In 2016, customers in Portland can visit their very own Veganz to see what all the hype is about, and hopefully encourage even more locations throughout North America!
