GQ Names Best Burger of the Year… And It's a Veggie Burger!
GQ’s recent mentions of vegan lifestyle and food have not gone unnoticed by the veg community. Their interview with NFL’s vegan David Carter has set the pace for being more open to featuring vegan lifestyle pieces. Most recently, the mag reported on “The 50 Best Things to Eat, Scarf, Sip, Spread, Slam, Savor, Scoop, Dip, Download (Yes, Download) & Drink Right Now,” including its nomination for the best burger around. And – surprise – it’s a veggie burger!
Nick Marino describes his experience visiting NYC’s Superiority Burger shop in the East Village:
“Maybe the best thing about N.Y.C. chef Brooks Headley’s raved-about Superiority Burger—better even than the nutty patty, the roasted umami-bomb tomato, the fact that no cows were harmed in the creation of this sandwich—is the texture. The bun squishes. The lettuce crunches. The pickles snap. That patty, made from ingredients Headley won’t divulge and miles beyond whatever your vegan friends use to assault your grill during barbecues, has genuine heft.”
The hole-in-the wall shop features an all-vegetarian menu and easily veganize-able items, including their stellar burger. I can personally vouch for this sandwich being out of this world, as I had the great fortune of visiting NYC last month and indulging in some of Superiority Burger’s food! While the burger is slider-size (but gourmet-burger-priced), it is very much worth it. Toothsome texture and complex, bursting flavors make this one of the best burgers I have ever tasted!
It’s great to see small veg businesses receive acclaim from such influential sources. Here’s to hoping this is a sign of an even bigger shift in how vegan food is pereceived (and enjoyed).
