Carrefour Launches Vegan & Vegetarian Line!
Remember when Target launched their own line of plant-based ready meals? Well, French supermarket Carrefour has seemed to follow in their footsteps and has just launched their own vegetarian and vegan meals, called Carrefour Veggie.
Carrefour is France’s second largest supermarket and the world’s fourth largest retail store, with locations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. The launch consists of 16 products, 11 of which are completely vegan, and the supermarket worked with the Association Végétarienne de France (Vegetarian Association of France).
The results are chilled and frozen products, including wheat and onion nuggets, tofu burgers, plant-based steaks, veggie balls, and more. The products are made from protein options such as soy, lentils and bulghur, and are said to be free of palm oil and artificial flavors.
While the launch is new, the idea actually arose two years ago, when Carrefour initiated a social media campaign to celebrate its 50th anniversary, with the line “If I were Carrefour…” as an online survey. The feedback and comments were varied, but over 10,000 votes were in favor of the inclusion of plant-based meals.
A statement from Carrefour describes the line as:
“A varied and affordable range featuring many simple and easy-to-cook formats.”
Carrefour have also stated that they are the first French retailer to launch their own vegetarian and vegan line. With customer trends changing in Europe–and worldwide, soon it may not be the only one!
