Philadelphia May Become Home To A Vegan Convenience Store!
Bloggers Carmella Lanni and Carlo Giardina, known as The Food Duo, may open Philadelphia’s first vegan convenience store!
They have recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for $50,000 that will run until January 1st, that would fund their potential new venture, titled V Marks the Shop. There will also be an event hosted by the duo on December 28 in New York City, in order to spread the word and gather support. The money raised will go towards the initial rent, inventory, refrigerators and freezers, equipment, and the permits/licenses.
The goal of the shop is to offer local products, cruelty-free items, vegan specialties, and basically all the things you would want to see in a convenience shop, to make it a one-stop trip–at reasonable prices. The store will also offer an online community support network that will include online shopping options, discussion boards, a blog, an event directory, and more! Potential plans for the future include the store hosting cooking demos and book-signings.
“We want [V Marks the Spot] to be a meeting place for vegans and non-vegans alike to learn and share about compassionate living. We want people to feel good about where they shop and what they buy. We want people to feel that a business ‘gets’ them and vice versa. It’s about supporting one another.”
While the exact location for the shop is not yet set, Lanni and Giardina have options in four potential neighborhoods in Philadelphia, but the concept of the shop, they hope, will go beyond location. Lanni stated:
“While we’ll be based in Philadelphia, we look at the idea of ‘Community. Compassion. Convenience’ as being global. Ultimately, we want to show that veganism is for everyone. It’s not a goal to be attained.”
With just about 16% raised, this potential vegan hotspot has until January 1st to become fully funded. If you are interested in donating or want to learn more, you can visit their Kickstarter campaign here!
