NFL's Griff Whalen: Veganism Provided 'Extra Edge'
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have recently released a short interview with Griff Whalen, the wide receiver for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, about his vegan diet.
Colts became a vegan almost two years ago for health and fitness reasons, and after adopting the diet, stated:
“I feel a lot lighter, faster, quicker on the field. There isn’t that heavy feeling, that groggy feeling after I eat. I just know how much better I feel.”
In the newly released interview, Whalen states he first tried veganism after learning more about nutrition to give him an “extra edge” as an athlete. He opted to try the “Engine 2 Diet”, a 28 day plant-based challenge diet, and stated that after the 28 days, he “felt great”, and saw a “huge change”.
Brendan Brazier’s book Thrive further encouraged the athlete to stick with his new diet, and in the interview he states that becoming vegan makes him feel leaner, lighter, and faster on the field, and that it even significantly improves his recovery time. Whalen also had a message to his fans about being vegan:
“It helped me a lot as an athlete…and it has a huge impact on the environment and on an animal’s well being.”
Whalen answered the “where do you get your protein” question with a smile on his face, stating he makes smoothies, and enjoys beans, lentils and quinoa. His favorite go-to snack before a game? Bananas!
Whalen joins David Haye and Austin Aries in showing what a vegan diet can do for an athlete and their performance! You can watch the full interview below:
