Ben & Jerry's Reveal Their New Line of Vegan Ice Creams!
This past summer, Ben & Jerry’s announced that they were in the midst of creating a dairy-free ice cream line that would have the same characteristics of their staple flavors.
The day we’ve all been waiting for has officially come: the company announced the flavors are ready, and will hit stores by mid to late February! The base has been revealed to be almond milk, and the company has seemed to go through a lot of trial and testing before opting for this dairy-free alternative. After testing about 60 versions for nine months with different dairy-free milks, including coconut, cashew and soy, they opted for the most neutral of the bunch, and that was almond. Kirsten Schimoler, Ben & Jerry’s principal food scientist, stated:
“Almond milk gave us the best blank canvas to carry the funky chunks and swirls that you know and love. We had to make it look like our ice cream, feel like our ice cream, and melt like our ice cream. The first 15 rounds was like throwing spaghetti at a wall and seeing what sticks. There was a lot of gross stuff at the beginning.”
All that work has seemed to pay off with taste tests already coming back overwhelmingly positive! And just what are the flavors the team decided to go with? They opted to make vegan versions of their two classic flavors, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chunky Monkey. They also decided to offer two limited edition flavors, Coffee Caramel Fudge, and P.B. & Cookies, the latter of which seems to be the favorite among those who have tried them.
The company has a page on their website dedicated to their new vegan flavors, and state that the four new options are all certified vegan (including their add-ons, such as brownies and cookies), fair-trade and free of GMOs.
