Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath Supports Cat Declawing Ban!
Geezer Butler, bassist and founding member of heavy metal band Black Sabbath, has joined forces with The Humane Society of the United States in order to speak out against the practice of declawing cats.
Many people declaw their cats in an effort to avoid any damage to household furniture, and may assume it is a simple and painless procedure. However, as PETA demonstrates in this list and photo series, declawing is very inhumane for cats-both in terms of pain and psychologically. As the list points out, declawing can even lead to more aggressive behavior in cats as they are more vulnerable without their first line of defense.
Butler, a self-proclaimed “crazy cat person” has recently lent his support to the NYS Declaw Ban, or A. 1297/2.5084, which, if passed, would make New York the first state in the United States to ban the practice of declawing cats. In his statement, Butler said:
“I am particularly delighted to be coming back to the Empire State after learning from my friends at The Humane Society of the United States that there is a bill before lawmakers that, if passed, would ban the practice of declawing cats. My wife and I have many rescued cats and we have never dreamed of putting them through an elective, convenience surgery such as declawing. Can you imagine having your fingers chopped off at the last bone? That is what the equivalent is for cats who are declawed. It is dreadfully inhumane!”
He urged New York legislators to stay true to the New Yorker characteristics of “smart, open-minded, and compassionate”, and help put this particular practice “in the trash bin of history”.
