First Vegan Doughnut Shop Opens in Los Angeles!
Organic. Vegan. Doughnuts. What more can there be to say? Pepples Donut Farm (also known as Donut Farm) is definitely a vegan’s dream come true, especially if that vegan has a sweet tooth.
Opened in 2007, it was originally a wholesale business selling doughnuts to cafes, co-ops, grocery stores, and more. Just some of the company’s doughnut flavors included persimmon with vanilla, salted caramel, double blueberry, Mexican hot chocolate, whiskey tangerine with fig, and much more. The company focused on all-vegan and organic ingredients for their signature doughnuts, and soon opened an actual shop–the Oakland Donut Farm, on 6037 San Pablo in 2010, serving their doughnuts as well as offering vegan brunch and lunch options. They have since expanded and opened a kiosk in San Francisco and a bakery in Berkeley.
Now the situation has become even sweeter, with another location having officially opened up in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles! While initial plans to open in December of 2015 were postponed, the shop opened on February 13 on 2609 W Sunset Blvd. It operates as a vegan coffee bar and doughnut shop, and according to the website, customers can expect to see some new flavors and “cake donuts and raised donuts every day”.
Head baker Mack is honest about what a doughnut is (organic or not) but luckily still focuses on the positive, stating:
“We’re not going to claim that it’s health food, since it’s still a fried doughnut and still sugar, but it is the lesser of two evils, and vegan!”
With so many Donut Farm locations now open, it seems that all the treats we once thought we had to give up as vegans are actually becoming more accessible!
