Race Car Driver Leilani Münter Says Vegan Diet Has "Greatest Impact" on Environment
Professional race car driver Leilani Münter has the most amazing tagline on her website: “Never underestimate a vegan hippie chick with a race car.” And she isn’t kidding around. This incredible pro has been referred to as one of the top ten female drivers in the world, yet her real skill is in advocating for a better planet. She recently wrote a piece for The Guardian asking the rest of the world to catch up, especially stressing the impact of switching to a vegan diet.
Münter prides herself on trying to offset her driving emissions by exclusively using her solar-powered electric car off the track, promoting solar and wind energy companies instead of fossil fuels, and adopting an acre of rainforest after every race she runs. She will be the first to say, however, that this is simply not enough if the goal is creating a safer future for our planet and all its inhabitants.
A strong and vocal vegan, Münter points out the devastating effects of worldwide animal agriculture and the hypocrisy and inefficiency of the USDA in representing factual and responsible dietary guidelines. She says:
“The USDA put the brakes on their plan to help inform Americans of how their food choices matter when it comes to sustainability and how we can make cleaner and healthier choices at the dinner table. The only people who gain from this decision is the animal agriculture business. It is disappointing that the USDA puts their interests above ours.”
By using her voice and her platform as a professional, Münter is keeping her audience informed, where governmental agencies have failed, and encouraging people to keep doing their own research into the impact of their lifestyle decisions. It is because of advocates like her that the word and the identity “vegan” is becoming more widespread. Thank you, Leilani, for all you do for the animals and for the planet!
