Celebrity Chef Michael Symon Blown Away by Vegan Food at 'By Chloe'!
Food Network star Michael Symon is best known for his appearances on shows such as Iron Chef America, Food Feuds and The Chew. A self-proclaimed “meat-centric” chef, he is the author of Carnivore: 120 Recipes for Meat Lovers.
However, on Friday’s episode of The Chew, which “explores life through food” with co-hosts Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Clinton Kelly, Daphne Oz, and Michael Symon, the Iron Chef seemed absolutely in awe of a variety of vegan foods and desserts he tried at New York City’s By Chloe restaurant.
The episode began with all of the co-hosts and guests biting into a burger Symon stated was one of his favorites, and after a clear consensus of it being delicious, Symon revealed that it was completely plant-based. We then saw him and his vegetarian wife Liz Shanahan visit the restaurant in person, where Symon stated he “overcame” his fears about vegan food. The duo tried the mac and cheese dish made from cashews and sweet potatoes topped with shitake bacon, the guacamole burger made with sweet potatoes, quinoa and black beans, and a wide range of desserts–including cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, and ice cream–the latter one including kale cookies and cream!
After trying the burger, Symon stated:
“This is the first veggie sandwich that I am comfortable still calling a burger. The things that you can do without animal fat…it blows my mind! You’ve continued to reinforce that vegan food can be delicious.”
Shanahan stated that the food was not “delicious vegan food” but just “delicious food”, and Symon added that By Chloe was the “restaurant that changed his mind about vegan food forever”. With an incredible review of the plant-based meals and desserts available, it seems By Chloe will become even busier, as Symon stated it was “packed all the time.” Good thing head chef Chloe Coscarelli plans to open two more locations this year alone!
