Vegan UFC Fighter Beats Opponent in 2 Rounds During UFC 196!
For Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fans, Saturday was a big day. Famed Irish fighter Conor McGregor was up against jiu-jitsu teacher Nate Diaz.
While Diaz was invited to fight as a replacement for the original opponent, Rafael dos Anjos, who suffered a foot injury, he was only given 11 days notice before the UFC 196 fight that took place in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Many assumed McGregor would win as he had a 15-fight winning streak and Diaz had no real training camp for this fight, but after just two rounds, Diaz had him in a “rear naked choke” that ultimately ended the fight in Diaz’s favor.
Diaz, who was also training for a triathlon, has never kept his diet a secret. A vegan who tries to remain mostly raw, just a few years ago he stated:
“I’ve been vegan since I was 18 years old. (I’ve) been eating raw for the last year and a half, not full complete raw, but as much as I can. Pretty much year round I try to eat raw food as much as I can; there’s raw food restaurants, so it’s not just broccoli and lettuce, there’s entrées and stuff.”
Even though the fight was a very epic one, one of the best parts had to be at the end, when Joe Rogan, who has been called out for claiming vegan athletes do not get enough nutrients, came to congratulate Diaz on his “spectacular victory” that “shook up the world”. Diaz’s response? “I’m not surprised”.
When learning about just some of the many vegan athletes out there competing, we’re not surprised either!
