Rowdy Girl Sanctuary: Cattle Ranch Becomes Vegan Farm Sanctuary
Most sanctuaries have incredible people, animals, and stories behind them. Rowdy Girl Sanctuary in Texas is no exception, and definitely features an interesting twist, as it was once a beef cattle ranch.
Originally owned by Tommy Sonnen, he married Renee six years ago, and not only did she change his life, but also the life (and fate) of all the animals he kept at his ranch. According to Tommy, once he noticed his wife befriending some of the animals at the ranch, he warned her not to become attached to them, stating “don’t name those cows”. His warnings fell on deaf ears, and Renee not only formed bonds with the animals, but also ended up making connections with the animals and the food she ate, and became a vegan. On the website, she states:
“I named them all and loved them, everyone – I’d go out and spend time with them, dance around them – sing to them and talk to them. I love these animals – I see their souls, and they see mine – I can tell they are looking at me out of the corner of their eye. They can feel our motives.”
While this transformation understandably led to some frustrations and issues within the marriage, Tommy ended up planning to sell his entire herd in order to save his relationship. Renee, however, had been keeping a blog titled “Vegan Journal of a Rancher’s Wife”, and as a result of her many followers, was able to raise $30,000 to buy the cattle ranch from her husband! She used the funds to turn it into a farm sanctuary, and the duo now keep 35 cows, 4 pigs, 6 chickens, and 4 horses. Tommy also reconsidered his lifestyle, and as a result, is a vegan now as well!
Rowdy Girl Sanctuary officially celebrated their one-year anniversary on February 20, and when Tommy was asked if he would change anything about his wife, he stated:
“I can’t think of a thing.”
How’s that for a happy ending!
