Barcelona Votes to Become a Veg-Friendly City!
Barcelona, a city that has already banned the practice of bullfighting and animal circuses, has officially declared itself a veg-friendly city!
Just this week, the city’s economy commission voted on the Catalan Republican Left’s proposal to make the city “a friend of vegan and vegetarian culture”, with support in favor by the Barcelona en Comú group, the Catalan Socialists, the nationalist Convergència party and the radical leftist CUP. What exactly does the proposal entail? According to Catalan News Agency:
“The project plans to create a BCN VEGPoint that will support vegan and vegetarian commerce, publish a list of affiliated stores and restaurants, and adhere to Paul McCartney’s ‘Meat-Free Monday’ campaign.”
Essentially, the VEGPoint will act as a networking and support centre for all businesses that make the decision to include more vegetarian and vegan options, and make these businesses and restaurants easier to find for both locals and tourists who are looking for them. It will also be responsible for providing individuals with detailed information on the diet.
As Barcelona is a city that has historically made animal welfare commitments ahead of other Spanish cities, there is hope that this initiative will also be one that is followed throughout Spain!
