Gelato Blue Transforms Itself into Syndey's First Vegan Gelato Shop!
We reported on Gigi Pizzeria in Australia making the switch to 100% vegan, and now there is even sweeter news! Gelato Blue, a family-owned gelato shop in Newtown, Australia, have become coconut milk-based, and therefore fully vegan!
The switch officially happened over Easter weekend according to goodfoodau, and was a process prompted by a variety of factors–including customer demand, animal welfare, and environmental issues. Fotini Platis, the store manager, elaborated more on the move to coconut milk:
“We wanted to create a product that anyone can enjoy. Because we are a family business, we treat our customers like family. When people were coming into the store and we had nothing to feed them, we felt just as bad as we would have if we were inviting them into our house and there was no suitable food.”
Platis also noted that the owners of the shop became more aware of plant-based eating due to their community, making it the third plant-based menu to be launched on its street in the last six months alone!
Now that the shop is fully vegan, what are the flavors that everyone can enjoy? The gelatos include salted Belgium chocolate, sesame halva, caramelized macadamia crunch and salted caramel Greek-style yoghurt, and sorbet options include peanut butter brownie, after dinner mint, and caramelized fig and cinnamon.
The variety and ethics sound absolutely incredible, and for those lucky enough to live in the general vicinity of this gelateria, it is located at 318 King Street.
