Publix Announces Cage-Free Transition
Mercy For Animals recently announced that Publix, the third largest supermarket chain in the United States, has confirmed their commitment sell only cage-free eggs by 2026.
The announcement comes after a three-month campaign spearheaded by Mercy For Animals, that included a website exposing the animal abuse in the supermarket chain’s supply sources, leafleting, call-ins, as well as a video campaign. The Humane League, The Humane Society of the United States, Compassion in World Farming and a Change.org petition also played crucial roles in this latest achievement. A statement from Mercy For Animals explains the significance:
“With this history-making commitment, every one of the 25 largest U.S. and Canadian grocers has now pledged to end its sales of eggs from caged hens. It is clear that the blatantly cruel practice of caging hens is on the road to oblivion.”
Publix outlines their commitment to cage-free eggs–as well as animal welfare–on their website. Mercy For Animals are now focused on campaigning for supermarket Hy-Vee to join the 25 chains and commit to cage-free eggs as well. Costco, the third largest retailer in the United States, committed to going cage-free earlier this year.
