The Internet Freaks Out at an Image of "Nipple Bacon," Realizes Meat Comes From Animals
Cognitive dissonance is a tricky thing. And, boy, did the internet sure get a heavy dose of it when a picture of a strip of bacon started circulating social media a few days ago. The unusual thing about the image was that the pig’s skin was still attached and it featured a very prominent and recognizable nipple.
Reddit originally posted the picture (click to see, if you dare), which then moved to Facebook. You may have seen the photo yourself, while scrolling through your feed. More than 2 million views and 3000 comments accompany the shocking sight, one which you would think wouldn’t be shocking at all.
“Out of sight, out of mind” seems to be the factory farming industries’ M.O., but when any person is asked if they know where bacon comes from, they will tell you it comes from a pig. The gruesome details of how that pig became a strip of flesh on someone’s skillet are intentionally hidden, but moments like the “nipple bacon” photo remind consumers where their food originates.
Yes, bacon comes from pigs. Yes, pigs have nipples, just like humans. And, yes, eating their flesh causes pain and suffering. Hopefully the shock and uncomfortable mental gymnastics of those exposed to the photo will lead to more compassionate food choices in the future.
