VegPEI is Challenging Canadian Restaurants to Veg It Up!
A new group in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), Canada, called VegPEI, has gone from planning successful vegan potlucks to doing something no other group in the province has done before, according to CBC News.
The group, which holds monthly potluck meetings and shares ideas and recipes, now has its sights set on the restaurants of P.E.I. for a vegan challenge to take place in September. One of the members, Brittany Boothroyd, told CBC more about why they are trying to encourage chefs to create gourmet plant-based dishes just in time for P.E.I.’s harvest season:
“The [vegan] trend across North America is growing so quickly that the culinary education to back that up is very, very slow. There are a couple of restaurants across P.E.I. that are starting to introduce more and more dishes because the demand is growing, but it is slow and that’s a big reason why we’re here today, is to spread the word and maybe help speed things up a little bit.”
The group is therefore challenging restaurants in P.E.I. to ‘Veg It Up’ from September 23 to 25, by asking chefs to come up with unique vegan dishes to add to their menu during that time. Customers will then vote in different categories, including best entree, best dessert, and most creative on the VegPEI Facebook page. The response to the challenge has been positive so far, with Boothroyd stating:
“A lot of our chefs across the Island are getting really excited about it, it’s not anything that’s been done on P.E.I. before. We have 12 restaurants confirmed already and we’re getting more every single day.”
