Venus Williams: 'Not Completely Vegan'
In a recent feature on People, tennis champion Venus Williams elaborates more on her recent partnership with dairy-free milk company Silk, and her path to a plant-based lifestyle. The 36-year-old, along with DJ Khaled, has been featured in a few of Silk’s “Do Plants” videos, with the latest one documenting her change of diet, or “path to plants.” In it, she stated:
“What led me to a vegan lifestyle? Honestly, my sisters. They saw me having health difficulties and they suggested ‘Why don’t you try a plant-based lifestyle?”
“We really believe in the same things, of a plant-based lifestyle and having a lot of natural foods in your diet. I’ve had a lot of fun working with them and [I’ve] been able to spread the message of plant-based living.”
However, Williams also confirmed that she is not entirely vegan, and prefers the label of a plant-based eater. She states it can be difficult to maintain the diet as a result of her constant travel, but that plants remain her first “go-to” food:
“I think plant-based is how you define it. Plants first, so that’s what it’s about. Mostly plants and there are some things I haven’t been able to get completely out of my diet. It becomes more challenging because I travel so much. You know, if you find yourself in the middle of somewhere – in China – it’s harder. So always, usually plants are my first go-to.”
She specifies butter as an animal-based product she never skimps on, with others that she has “struggled to let go” of. She ended the interview stating that in the end, “it’s all about leading a healthy lifestyle that works for you.”
