Hellmann's Vegan Mayo is Now "Vegan Certified"
Well, isn’t this interesting. After spending most of last year sueing and complaining about Just Mayo’s cruelty-free existence, Hellmann’s released its “Carefully Crafted Dressing and Sandwich Spread.” Now, the product has acquired the coveted “vegan certified” logo and the V-word will be proudly displayed on the label.
Russel Lilly, Hellmann’s marketing director, stated:
“Our fans depend on us to deliver delicious tasting choices that stand up to their families’ high taste standards and changing dietary preferences.”
He also mentioned Hellmann’s is “proud” to have gained the certification. This may be the most obvious example of “if ya can’t beat ’em, join ’em” decision-making in recent vegan news. To go on a mission to destroy your opponent, only to do an about-face and start selling your own version of the product you so vehemently opposed in the first place is pretty transparent. On the other hand, it will probably get eggless mayo onto the sandwiches of more people – and, through that lens, it’s a small victory for the animals.
