Brooklyn Borough President Goes Vegan for Health
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams was diagnosed with type II diabetes six months ago. Within a month of the diagnosis, Adams changed his lifestyle and diet, and NY1 notes that he is “now vegan and exercising more” and has lost 30 pounds and “no longer needs medication.” Adams stated:
“Eighty percent of the food I eat I cook myself. I eat no oil at all. I eat no meat at all. We can no longer exist separately, where, I’m gonna do my job but I don’t have time to take care of my health. No, we’ll make time.”
Adams also criticized the healthcare system for only offering him the option of medication rather than focusing on food and lifestyle. He added:
“My recovery is an indictment on our healthcare system. The sole goal should have been, Eric we’re going to get that reversed. Not Eric we’re going to give you the prescription that you need that you can take the rest of your life.”
According to the article, Adams is now declaring a “war against diabetes” through programs aiming to improve the health of his community.
