'World's Saddest Polar Bear' Temporarily Relocated to Ocean Park
We wrote about how the bears and lions in what was considered to be the ‘world’s saddest zoo‘ in Gyumri, Armenia were finally able to experience a happy ending. Now, there is reason to be cautiously optimistic about the future of Pizza the polar bear, known as the ‘world’s saddest polar bear.’
Humane Society International (HSI) reported earlier this week that following their global campaign, China’s Grandview Shopping Mall has announced that Pizza “will reportedly be returned to an undisclosed ocean park in North China where he was born, reuniting him with his parents.”. According to Animals Asia, Pizza, as well as six young belugas, five walrus calves, a wolf and arctic foxes, were on display at the Grandview Aquarium in Guangzhou, where people regularly took selfies with the animals.
While the statement from the mall stated that Pizza’s relocation is only temporary until the “upgrading of the facility” is complete, they held a “great and special farewell party” for the bear on Sunday, November 13. Peter Li, China policy specialist at HSI, stated:
“Pizza the polar bear has endured a life of deprivation and suffering in his small, artificial, glass-fronted room at the shopping mall, so the news that he’s getting out at last makes me very happy and relieved for him. But we implore the mall to make this a permanent move for Pizza. At last he will feel the sun on his fur, sniff fresh air and see the sky above him. We commend the mall for being gracious enough to listen to Chinese and global voices of concern, and hope they will do the right thing for this poor bear who has already been through enough.”
HSI released footage of Pizza last month where he was “exhibiting classic signs of mental distress,” which served as “evidence of frustration and mental decline.” According to the press release, Capital Animal Welfare Association (CAWA) will “continue to pursue dialogue with the Grandview regarding the polar bear and the other animals still at the facility.”
