NFL Star Griff Whalen on Veganism: "I have felt a big improvement physically"
We have written about former Indianapolis Colts and and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Griff Whalen and his vegan diet before, when he was interviewed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and ESPN. Having adopted a vegan diet about two-and-a-half years ago, Whalen credited the diet for providing an edge to his overall performance, stating:
“It doesn’t matter how hard you train, there’s a certain limit to how much you can do on the field or in the weight room. After a point, nutrition plays a huge part in how quickly you can recover, how hard you can push yourself the next day, back-to-back days and stuff like that. I feel like it’s helped me tremendously and given me a big edge in that regard.”
In a recent feature on Mass Live about being signed by the New England Patriots, the “5-foot-11, 190 pound Whalen” who “has been a vegan — avoiding meat and dairy — for the past two and a half years,” stated:
“I have felt a big improvement physically. I started it not knowing if it was a long-term thing or just kind of for fun or whatever, but I felt a pretty big improvement so I stuck with it, but you get significantly less inflammation from those foods and that’s a huge part of being an athlete, all the stress we put on our bodies, as far as speeding up recovery and training and that sort of thing.”
We hope the “100% plant powered vegan athlete” continues to reel in the benefits that have helped so many other athletes as well!
