Big Bang Theory Star Mayim Bialik: "I'm a Vegan" [VIDEO]
Actress and neuroscientist Mayim Bialik, best known for her role as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler in the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory, released a YouTube video last month detailing her reasons for being a vegan.
In the video, Bialik introduces herself as a vegan who doesn’t eat “meat or chicken or pork or fish or eggs or dairy,” and states that she “wasn’t born like this” since “most of us grow up with no idea how food gets to our plate.” She then talks about the rise of factory farms and how cutting costs to make higher profits leads to both animal welfare and workers’ rights violations.
She specifies some of the issues that arise from cutting costs, including cramming animals into small spaces and cages, common practices like debeaking, and not maintaining the standards of the facilities (inspections, cleanliness, etc.). She states that while we may be producing “economically efficient food, the question is, at what cost?” and adds:
“Millions of animals right now spend their lives in a cage with their beaks torn off living in hostile situations, unable to stand from the weight of the bodies they have been bred into.”
Bialik ends the video stating that her hope is that “someday we’ll get closer to a healthier and more ethical balance for all,” and until that day comes, she is a vegan. You can watch the full video below:
