Sunfed Meats: Bringing Chicken-Free Chicken to the Southern Hemisphere
Shama Sukul Lee, the founder and chief executive of Sunfed Meats, was recently featured on TVNZ 1’s Seven Sharp, and her “chicken-free chicken” was definitely the spotlight! A former software programmer, Lee wanted to “redefine what meat means to us” and therefore created the “first plant meat in the Southern Hemisphere.” The hosts of Seven Sharp stated that this big idea could:
“Help slow global warming, it could help to restore animal welfare, and sort out the health of our hearts.”
While it is noted in the segment that there are many companies currently committed to creating plant-based meat, they tend to focus on red meat, and Lee has instead set her sights on the “most consumed meat on in the Western world and the home kitchen.” While the “how” of Sunfed Meats will remain a mystery, the ingredients of the chicken include water, pea protein, vegetable powder, plant starch, and natural yeast extract. Lee stated that it naturally has higher amounts of protein, iron, and zinc when compared to chicken as well.
The segment included a taste test, and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive with people stating that they could not “tell the difference” and that the product “tastes absolutely like chicken.” According to the program, Sunfed’s chicken-free chicken products will “hit shop shelves in a few weeks,” with “plant-based beef, pork and fish to follow.” Until then, we can live vicariously through the taste tasters’ experiences right here!
