Venus Williams: Plant-Based Diet "Changed My Life"
Tennis champion Venus Williams was recently featured in an interview with Health about her “drastic” plant-based diet and how it changed her life. We know from the “path to plants” promotional video with Silk that Williams became interested in a plant-based diet due to health concerns, and in an interview later on with People, she confirmed she kept a mostly vegan diet.
In this recent feature, when asked why she made the decision to change her diet, Williams stated:
“I started for health reasons. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and I wanted to maintain my performance on the court. Once I started I fell in love with the concept of fueling your body in the best way possible. Not only does it help me on the court, but I feel like I’m doing the right thing for me. I literally couldn’t play tennis anymore, so it changed my life.”
When asked about some of her favorite recipes or “cheat meals,” Williams mentioned a celery-root soup she makes from scratch and an orange creamsicle smoothie when she prefers something sweet, stating “there are different ways to ease your itch when you want junk food.” She emphasized that it is always important to actually “enjoy what you’re eating,” and to find healthier replacements for unhealthy foods or snacks to avoid feeling like “you’re missing out.” She added:
“But it doesn’t mean you have to be perfect because you do have to have a little fun. But when you’re doing the right things, and you’re eating plants, and you’re eating live foods, it helps you in your life. I think you feel more energized and you feel more positive.”
