Review of Ben & Jerry’s Vegan Ice Cream Options!
When I first heard about Ben & Jerry’s incorporating dairy-free vegan options into their famous ice cream line, I had to contain my excitement as they were of course only available in the United States. Fast forward a few months and I found myself in Florida, (unintentionally) walking by a Ben & Jerry’s store (I didn’t even know they existed!)
After experimenting with coconut, soy, and cashew milk, the company settled on using almond milk as their base for its neutral flavor. They created vegan versions of their two classic flavors, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chunky Monkey, and also offer two limited edition flavors, Coffee Caramel Fudge and P.B. & Cookies. After two separate trips to the shop during my short time in Florida, I opted to try both Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Coffee Caramel Fudge, so one classic and one limited edition, the latter featured below:
The Coffee Caramel Fudge, which I tried first, was definitely my favorite of the two, with the caramel swirls, chocolate chunks and overall coffee flavor winning me over immediately. With ice cream being my favorite dessert in general, it was nice to try an option that had some fun extras, although I found both options to be a little too sweet for my sweet tooth. I had assumed the Chocolate Fudge Brownie would be the winner based on the fact that it simply had more chocolate, but while the brownies were very rich and delicious, I found the base to be too plain, and when there were no brownies left (because I actively searched for them all), I found myself wishing the ice cream had a coconut-base instead to make it creamier and more interesting.
While I would buy Coffee Caramel Fudge again, instead of the Chocolate Fudge Brownie I would instead try the P.B. & Cookies, since the toppings alone seem like they would make it great no matter what. Since I am not a big fan of the overpowering banana in ice creams (Chunky Monkey), I can predict that both limited edition flavors would be the winners in my book, and hope they are not discontinued before they make their way to Canada!
*After trying Coconut Seven Layer Bar I can say without hesitation that it is my absolute favorite Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy ice cream flavor so far. The caramel swirls mixed with the coconut flavor and the chocolate chunks won me over immediately. While the graham crackers provide a nice touch, the only negative aspect of this option (besides being too sweet in general) is that I found the walnuts to be a little out of place. But it is definitely my favorite so far and is very delicious! Next up: Peanut Butter Half Baked!
UPDATE: According to a few Instagram and Facebook posts, Ben & Jerry’s has secretly added two new flavors to their vegan line! Let’s give a warm welcome to Coconut Seven Layer Bar and Cherry Garcia! I hope to be able to sample and review these delicious looking flavors soon:
UPDATE #2: More options have been added and the full list (as of February 2018) of Ben & Jerry’s non-dairy flavors can be found here!
