New Facility Focused on Plant-Based Protein Opens in France
On February 28, French company Tereos, known for starch products and sweeteners, opened up a pilot facility in Alsace, France that will focus on creating plant-based protein under the brand name Le sauté végétal (vegetable stir-fry). According to Food Ingredients First, the product is “100% plant-based, and composed of wheat proteins and chickpea flour, all from French agricultural commodities,” and will be prepared in “shredded form.” CEO Alexis Duval stated:
“The inauguration of this industrial pilot is an important step in the work Tereos has been conducting around plant protein for many years. It demonstrates the Group’s great capacity to innovate and develop new products that cater for the world’s evolving foods needs.”
The patented process of the product, originally called GenVie, received an award in 2015 at the French World Innovation Contest, and according to the article, results in a “healthy, tasty, easy-to-cook product that is ideal for all recipe types.” Earlier this year, French company Roquette opened the world’s largest pea processing plant in Manitoba, Canada.
