Professional Surfer Tia Blanco on Veganism: "That’s just what’s right for me"
I first found out about professional surfer and vegan Tia Blanco on Beyond Meat’s website, where she is a brand ambassador. Men’s Journal summarizes the 19-year-old’s impressive achievements, stating that she “ranked in the top 50 female surfers in the world by the World Surf League, took the first place Gold medal at the 2015 International Surfing Association (ISA) Open Women’s World Surfing Championship in Popoyo, Nicaragua, and came back in 2016 to successfully defend her title by winning the 2016 Championship in Playa Jacó, Costa Rica.”
In a recent article in World Surf League (WSL), Blanco offered three tips for anyone interested in veganism and shared her personal reasons for adopting the lifestyle, stating:
“I went vegan for the animals. I love them all and I don’t want to eat my friends. I know it sounds cheesy but it’s true. It was surprising how easy it is to be vegan. I was vegetarian my whole life prior so the transition was relatively easy for me to cut out dairy. When I cut out the dairy I noticed I had more energy. I also lost some fat and gained muscle!”
Blanco tells Men’s Journal what specifically led to her transitioning from vegetarianism to veganism:
“When I was 15, I watched the documentary Glass Walls and read The China Study, and then it became quite clear to me why I wanted to be vegetarian and why I wanted to adopt a vegan lifestyle. After doing my research, I chose to go vegan and have been dedicated to a vegan diet for four years now.”
Blanco added that she realized that she doesn’t see food “the same way as everyone else does” and that a vegan diet is what is right for her. She keeps a separate Instagram account specifically dedicated to veganism and recipes, called Tia’s Vegan Kitchen, which you can follow here.
