Pret A Manger Opening Second All-Veggie Location
Britain’s Pret A Manger, an organic coffee and natural foods shop and restaurant with locations throughout the world, has announced that its second all-vegetarian branch, Veggie Pret, will be opening in London in early April.
According to Pret A Manger CEO Clive Schlee’s blog, the second location follows the unexpected success of the first one on 35 Broadwick Street, which was initially only intended as a one-month pop up experiment. Schlee writes:
“I can tell you now that our second Veggie Pret will open at Great Eastern Street on 4th April. A lot of Pret staff wanted their shops to go Veggie, but Great Eastern St got the call up based on the high levels of vegetarian sales in the area.”
In terms of the menu, Schlee adds:
“You’ve been asking for more vegetarian and vegan options and our chefs have been experimenting with new ingredients and flavours to meet the challenge. We’ll open Great Eastern Street with 20 new recipes on the menu, including a vegan Macaroni Cheese — which has taken our team the best part of a year to perfect — and a vegan chocolate brownie.”
Dominika Piasecka, spokesperson for The Vegan Society, noted that the new location will be good news for a wide variety of people, stating:
“We are very pleased that Pret are recognising the increasing demand for vegan food by opening a second Veggie Pret shop, this time permanently. As more customers learn about the ethical, environmental and health benefits of the vegan lifestyle, many businesses have been reacting positively by introducing vegan choices. Offering vegan options in restaurants makes clear commercial sense – businesses are opening potential market up to not only half a million vegans in the UK, but also to a million more vegetarians, the huge number of meat and dairy reducers, the lactose intolerant, and others who simply enjoy vegan food from time to time.”
The new location is set to open at noon on April 4. And for those living in the United States, as the “movement for eating less meat continues to grow,” Schlee states that the “next stop for Pret will be in the US” where a “new veggie range” will be launched in all US shops by the end of April.
