WWE Star Austin Aries: I'm vegan "because I give a damn!"
We wrote about TNA World Heavyweight Champion Austin Aries over a year ago, when he became the first vegan to sign a deal with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) to join its NXT brand. Recently, Marriott TRAVELER interviewed Aries before his upcoming debut at WrestleMania 33 on April 2, and most of the questions revolved around the WWE star’s plant-based diet. When asked why he became a vegan in the first place, Aries responded:
“There are so many ways to answer that, right? Long answer: Because of health reasons and benefits, environmental benefits, and the compassion aspect of the animals. Short answer: Because I give a damn! When it comes to the food industry and the realities of what I was eating, the more I learned the more I kept looking for info.”
He also noted that his interest in the lifestyle began 16 years ago as he “started to look into all the different aspects of what went into getting meat to our tables,” and when asked about health benefits he has experienced since, he stated:
“I think for my age I feel good, especially considering what I do for a living. If you think about it, as a society we put more emphasis on our outsides than our insides. I live a healthy lifestyle overall so it’s part of the way in which I take care of myself. The knowledge of food and what you put in your body is very important.”
Aries also clarified two common misconceptions surrounding a vegan lifestyle. First, that it is possible to “build muscle and be plant based,” since all you need are “quality nutrients and amino acids.” Second, he stated that the idea that it is “expensive to eat healthy” is not true and it’s actually just “expensive to eat conveniently.” His advice? “Make smart choices and put a little work in the kitchen,” and in terms of traveling, the key is “just about being prepared”–and, like Travis Barker, using Happy Cow!
