Veganism Blamed for Colin Kaepernick's 'Free Agent' Status
About a year ago, Katie Medlock wrote an article pointing out why attributing Colin Kaepernick’s loss of muscle mass to his new vegan diet was irresponsible speculation. Now, the American football quarterback’s newfound status of being a free agent has also been linked to–surprise–his vegan diet.
In a recent article in Sports Illustrated, writer Stanley Kay tries to answer the question, “Why exactly is Colin Kaepernick unemployed?” and examines a few reasons. While NFL executives “repeatedly” bashing “Kaepernick’s peaceful protest anonymously” is noted as a “big factor,” he points out the latest theory via NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, who stated on Twitter:
“At season’s end, Colin Kaepernick stated he was fully committed to football. But some teams are unconvinced and wonder about his vegan diet.”
Many responded to the post pointing out successful vegan athletes, and Kay eloquently responded:
“Makes sense. That must be why Cardinals signed Tyrann Mathieu to a five-year extension last year just months after he announced he was going vegan. Recently retired NFL running back Arian Foster is vegan. Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all-time, is “almost” vegan.”
Kay also mentioned near-vegan tennis stars Venus Williams and Novak Djokovic and vegan ultramarahoner Scott Jurek. If Kaepernick’s vegan diet is really a cause for concern, perhaps Maiocco and “some teams” should take also a closer look at our lists of vegan athletes demonstrating plant power in action here and here.
