Germany Led the Market for Vegan Food & Drink Products in 2016
Market intelligence agency Mintel’s Global New Products Database (GNPD) recently conducted research that found Germany to be the “leading country for vegan product innovation globally.” While some news outlets are expressing surprise at the news, previous reports by Mintel demonstrated a significant growth in the demand for plant-based food in the country, as well as a 633 percent increase in vegetarian-labeled food options available.
According to the research, in 2016 Germany led the market for “vegan food and drink product launch activity,” with “18% of all global food and drink product launched with vegan claims occurring in Germany.” The United States was a close second at 17%. According to Katya Witham, Senior Food and Drink Analyst at Mintel:
“Veganism is now seen as a trendy lifestyle, and Germany is home to the most vegan product launch innovation. Today, vegan products attract attention from a much wider audience, namely health and ethically driven, flexi-vegan consumers.”
Mintel research also revealed that while there is a “strong following” for vegetarian diets among German adults, “younger generations in particular are embracing the lifestyles,” with 14% of Germans aged between 16 and 24 identifying themselves as vegetarian, and one in ten as vegan. However, due to a possible “trend towards naturalness,” the number of “meat-substitute products launched in Germany fell by 17% between 2015 and 2016.” To read the full report, visit this link.
