The Reducetarian Summit to Take Place in NYU Next Weekend
You’ve heard of vegans, vegetarians, and even flexitarians, but have you heard of reducetarians? Coined by Brian Kateman, founder and president of the Reducetarian Foundation, the word simply means a “person who is deliberately reducing his or her consumption of meat.”
The first-ever Reducetarian Summit, to be held at New York University on May 20 and 21, will bring together “vegans and omnivores and everyone in-between.” Participants will “come together to discuss strategies to reduce societal meat consumption,” with the overall aim of uniting “prominent environmental, health, and animal protection non-profits with leading foodservice and food technology companies to create a more equitable, sustainable, and compassionate food system.” Kateman states:
“The time has come to unite forces. We may have different motivations and views on animal agriculture, but when it comes to reducing societal consumption of animal products and ending factory farming, we’re all on the same team.”
The Summit will include workshops, breakout sessions, panel discussions, as well as meals provided by fresh&co., with speakers from Memphis Meats, Impossible Foods, Hampton Creek, The Humane Society of the United States, Greenpeace, Google Food, Oxfam America, Wild Aid, Maastricht University, Farm Sanctuary and many more. Topics include the impact of conventional animal agriculture on the world, changing attitudes and behaviors, the politics of meat, social entrepreneurship and investments, the role of chefs and restaurateurs in promoting plant-based eating, and the hot-topic of the year: cultured meat.
