The Guardian: "Everyone can benefit from a plant-based lifestyle"
“I think I’ve managed [to adopt veganism] successfully. I don’t find anything hard to give up, as such, because I know the feeling scoring goals gives me. In terms of fitness and fatigue towards the end of games, I still feel good. I’m trying. I still enjoy training, the buzz is still there and I just want to play as long as I can. So I do the stuff that will give me the best opportunity to perform and score goals.”
Shortly after, a piece focused on how ‘veganism raises your game’ was published, which included Defoe as well as other plant-based athletes, who have seen “their performance soar and recovery time plummet” as a result. The list includes ultramarathoner Scott Jurek, former NFL defenseman David Carter, boxer David Haye, and tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams (who is mostly plant-based).
The article concludes by stating that “the science is clear: everyone can benefit from a plant-based lifestyle,” and while “we may not all get the thrill of scoring a goal at Wembley,” we will “all feel better, live healthier and run farther” when “powered by plants.”
