Former President Bill Clinton on Vegan Diet: "I didn’t give it a second thought" [VIDEO]
On July 13, former presidents of the United States Bill Clinton and George W. Bush had a discussion on leadership during a graduation ceremony for the Presidential Leadership Scholars Program.
About 43 minutes into the discussion, which is just under 1.5 hours, the topic of exercise, outdoor activities and fitness was brought up. Clinton’s weight loss since his presidency was remarked on, and he was asked if he found the vegan* diet he adopted hard to follow, to which he responded:
“Not when you have quadruple heart bypass and you want to live to be a grandfather. I didn’t give it a second thought. I realized that I was highly prone to arterial blockage, and I thought I’d cut my chances. I literally wanted to see if I could live to be a grandfather.”
He added that he is now the oldest person in his family–man or woman, for three generations, and that he’d like to “hang around” since he’s “kind of having a good time being alive.”
*On February 19, 2016, according to an article published in Politico, Clinton stated that although a vegan diet changed his life and that he prefers it, at the request of his doctor, he began including organic salmon once a week to his diet.
