Restaurant Review: Blue Star Donuts in Portland, Oregon
“Donuts for Grownups.” That could mean anything from erotic shapes to alcohol-infused. At Blue Star Donuts, all it means is that the flavors are anything but plain. Say goodbye to basic glazed, chocolate, and powdered, and say hello to Orange Olive Oil and Matcha Latte.
The ingenuity in Blue Star Donuts is not just in the donut flavors, but also in the respect for the donut-making process. The dough is made using a classic brioche recipe from the south of France and takes 18 hours to make by hand daily.
Blue Star always carries a selection of vegan donuts for the dairy-free crowd. Compared to their traditional recipe, the vegan options are more dense but still quite tasty. During our visit, we tried the Orange Olive Oil, Blueberry Cake, and Matcha Latte vegan donuts. The Orange Olive Oil was a lovely blend of savory and sweet, the addition of the bourbon to the blueberry donut was an unexpected “adult” addition to the flavor profile, and the Matcha Latte was out-of-this-world delicious. The green tea really popped, making it an absolute must-try vegan treat in the Portland area.
While there are plenty of donut places in Portland, Blue Star Donuts should be at the top of that list. Many bakeries attempt the gourmet donut concept and fall flat. Blue Star Donuts only soars.
