Three Cities in Brazil Commit to Including Vegan Meals in Schools
As part of Mercy For Animals’ Brazil food policy program, Alimentação Consciente Brasil (Conscious Eating Brazil), the Brazilian cities of Cuiaba, Varzea Grande, and Sao Goncalo have committed to serving plant-based meals once a week in schools.
According to the announcement, the initiative will “create 5 million vegan meals a year”–or 140,000 vegan meals a week–“that would otherwise contain animal products.” The article adds:
“In Varzea Grande and Sao Goncalo, both the second-largest cities in their states, officials committed to serving entirely plant-based foods one day a week in city-run public schools. In Cuiaba, the capital and largest city in Mato Grosso, officials committed to serving entirely plant-based foods one day a week in both city-run public schools and city-run social assistance programs.”
