Restaurant Review: Salt & Straw in Portland, Oregon
When visiting Portland, one of the recommendations that will first come out of your friends’ mouths is Salt & Straw. Why? Aren’t there incredible ice cream flavors all over the world? Absolutely, but these guys do it better and always have vegan options.
First, Salt & Straw features flavors that are unique to each location. Therefore, Portland’s locations feature the local ingredients. Second, those local ingredients — such as olive oil and chocolate — are only sourced from local businesses, which help the local economy thrive. Third, their flavors are beautifully-crafted and gourmet; they’re nothing short of ingenious.
Their “classic” flavors are always available in-store. One of their classic flavors is also vegan, Petunia’s Cookies & Cream with Raspberry Swirl — made with a coconut base, but the coconut isn’t too strong. The texture is very creamy, not crumbly or dense in any way.
Alongside of the ice cream bar, you will also find a lot of the local goods used in the flavors, such as chocolate and balsamic vinegar. Many of those stores are not within walking distance of Salt & Straw, so it’s another wonderful way to encourage others to buy local without making the trip to everyone’s storefront or booth at the farmers’ market.
When you’re at Salt & Straw, you’re shopping hyperlocal and the ice cream is great. What more could you want?
