Actress Jessica Chastain on How Veganism Improved Her Energy Levels & Skin
Actress Jessica Chastain, best known for her roles in Interstellar and The Martian, recently spoke to W Magazine about her career, film choices, production company, and her 12-year-strong plant-based diet.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph in 2014, Chastain stated she was a “pescatarian for 15 years,” but “wasn’t feeling so well.” When asked how she came to be interested in veganism in W Magazine, she stated:
“It was because I was really low on energy. I love cheese and shellfish. I mean I’ve always had some problems, like my cholesterol was very high and the doctor wanted to put me on medicine. I said that seems crazy! This was like 12 years ago, so yeah, I was in my 20s, and I thought I don’t want to start taking cholesterol pills.”
She added that she realized the shellfish she was consuming was the culprit behind her high cholesterol, and that her diet “was not helping.” After trying a two-week vegan food delivery program, she noted:
“Immediately I just had more energy than I’ve ever had in my life. Then when I finished it, it wasn’t like I’m going to be vegan. I went to the restaurant and I ordered fish and risotto and immediately I felt bad, like not emotionally but physically, and so I said okay, I’m going to just listen to my body now. Being vegan was not anything I ever wanted to be. I just really was listening to what my body was telling me.”
Chastain added that as a result of a “clean diet,” her skin has improved and “you don’t have to cover up your skin or hide things.” To read the full feature, visit this link.
