Rooney Mara: Veganism is “not limited to the kitchen”
Vegan actress Rooney Mara, best known for her performance in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and for her notorious 9-minute (vegan) pie-eating scene in A Ghost Story, was recently featured in Vogue for a “5 Things You Didn’t Know About Rooney Mara” article.
Mara had previously told director Steven Soderbergh that she is vegan because she tries “to eat food that hasn’t been washed in ammonia and then packaged in the shape of breaded dinosaurs filled with cheese,” and that can “actually make it through the 20-plus feet of [her] small intestine.”
In the Vogue spotlight, we learn that Mara, whose sister Kate is also a vegan actress, is “vegan in more ways than one” as it extends beyond her kitchen:
“In Mara’s house, veganism is not limited to the kitchen; it also permeates into her wardrobe. For ethical reasons, Mara is in the process of phasing leather out of her closet, a task that she finds particularly difficult in the shoe department. Furthermore, her environmentally minded lifestyle has prompted her to tote around crockery to minimize her waste. No plastic cups for her.”
