Instagram Launches New System to Combat Animal Abuse
Instagram has officially launched a new alert system meant to combat and educate users on animal abuse.
According to National Geographic, “searches for a wide range of wildlife hashtags will trigger a notification informing people of the behind-the-scenes animal abuse,” with a message that reads:
“Animal abuse and the sale of endangered animals or their parts is not allowed on Instagram. You are searching for a hashtag that may be associated with posts that encourage harmful behavior to animals or the environment.”
Those receiving the pop-up message have the option of clicking “Learn more,” which will redirect them to Instagram’s Help Center that provides “a lot more information on wildlife exploitation.” Instagram spokesperson Emily Cain states of this new feature:
“We care about our community, including the animals and the wildlife that are an important part of the platform. I think it’s important for the community right now to be more aware. We’re trying to do our part to educate them.”
According to the article, Instagram will not be disclosing the entirety of selected hashtags as it wants users to “stumble on them organically” and hopes to curtail attempts to “preemptively skirt the warnings.”
