UK Supermarket Chain Tesco Launches Vegan Range in 600 Locations
UPDATE: Bloomberg reports that in addition to selling more “ready meals from ranges like Hearty Food Co.,” Tesco deciding to include more “plant-based products from the new Wicked Kitchen line” has helped “the U.K.’s biggest retailer overcome a Brexit-fueled surge in costs,” with its profit jumping in the latest financial year!
(January 9, 2018) Last year, UK supermarket chain Tesco pledged to introduce vegan labeling across its own-brand product range. Later on in the year, it also doubled its vegetarian and vegan festive centerpiece offerings for the holidays.
Now, the retailer has launched Wicked Kitchen, a “new range of irresistible meals that celebrate everything that’s ‘wicked’ and tasty about plants.” According to the press release, “demand for vegetarian and vegan food has soared,” with a specific demand for “chilled vegetarian ready meals and meat substitutes soaring by 25 per cent.”
Chef Derek Sarno, Tesco’s director of plant-based innovation, stated:
“For too long, vegans have been overlooked, with many offerings that are available seemingly created to appease rather than truly please. Wicked Kitchen plans to change all that and I’m proud to work with Tesco and offer all its customers delicious meals to get them on board with this growing foodie revolution.”
Some of the options of the Wild Kitchen range include:
- Carrot Pastrami-Spiced Wrap, £3
- Sweet Potato Pakora Wrap, £3
- Smashin’ Pumpkin Falafel Sandwich, £3
- Rainbow Curry Bowl (GF), £3.50
- Moroccan-Inspired Bowl, £3.50
- Wicked Teriyaki Noodles, £4
- Naked Burrito, £4
- Nana’s Mushroom Bolognese, £4
- Caponata Sourdough Pizza, £4
- BBQ Mushroom Sourdough Pizza, £4
Wicked Kitchen, which includes 11 ready meals and nine food-to-go options, has been made available in 600 stores across the UK as of January 8. You can learn more about the line here.
