Sainsbury’s to Sell Mock Meat Range Alongside Meat
UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has announced that its new vegan range will be sold alongside meat in its stores on a trial basis.
The Guardian writes:
“British shoppers will soon be able to find “fake” meats – including burgers that ooze lookalike “blood” when cut open – in the chiller section alongside real meats, as Sainsbury’s announced its new vegan-friendly range would go on sale this month.”
According to the article, the trial will begin on June 27 in 400 of Sainsbury’s larger locations throughout the UK.
The vegan range is created by Danish manufacturer Naturli’ Foods and will include ““lookalike” burgers and mince” that have an “underlying meatiness” thanks to umami flavors and beet root.
Henrik Lund, the chief executive officer of Naturli’ Foods, stated:
“Our goal is to contribute to restore the balance between nature and man. We’ve developed this product assuming that many people want to eat plants instead of animals, but are afraid of compromising on flavour and maybe even missing out on their favourite dishes such as lasagne or burger patties.”
“I want as many people as possible to have access to our products. A lot of people love to eat meat. What I’m doing is allowing them to eat more of what they love, more meat. It’s just meat from plants. That’s the only difference.”
